Maintaining Your Copper Sink’s Patina
The natural “living finish” of copper, known as patina, is what makes it truly unique. Over time, your sink will develop rich, ever-changing hues as it interacts with water, air, and the occasional splash of something acidic (think lemon juice!). While these changes can surprise new copper sink owners, they’re part of what makes copper sinks so special.
Let’s dive into how you can care for your sink’s patina and manage discoloration to keep it looking its best. While it’s impossible to completely prevent discoloration, you can minimize spotting and maintain its original look with a little care.
Reducing Copper Sink Discoloration
- Rinse after every use: A quick rinse helps wash away food particles, juices, and debris that could leave marks
- Clean regularly: Use warm water, gentle dish soap, and a soft cloth or a Sinkology Breeze Scrubber to prevent green oxidation and spotting
- Protect with Copper Care IQ® Kit: This kit helps water bead off the surface and prevents food debris from sticking to your sink
- Use a SinkSense® bottom grid: Keep dirty dishes off the surface to avoid prolonged contact and unwanted marks
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Steer clear of abrasive cleaners, bleach, and drain cleaners that could strip the patina

Restoring Copper’s Patina
When Discoloration Happens
Discoloration isn’t just expected—it’s inevitable with copper. Whether caused by acidic foods like lemons and ketchup, harsh chemicals, or just heavy use, it’s all part of the natural lifecycle of your sink. But don’t worry—your sink’s patina is resilient and will restore itself over time.
- Scrub and blend: Use hot, soapy water and our Breeze Scrubber to gently lighten shiny spots or areas of discoloration. Be firm but don’t scrub off the patina entirely.
- Rinse and dry: After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with hot water and dry with a microfiber cloth (included in the Copper Care IQ Kit).
- Let the process work naturally: Avoid applying protective coatings like Care IQ’s Defend to shiny areas; this allows the patina to return and blend seamlessly.
Pro Tip: If you notice green build-up (oxidation), don’t panic! This is a natural reaction. Use your Breeze Scrubber or even your fingernail to gently remove it before cleaning the area.
