Creating a bright and cozy kitchen – it’s all in the details!

Our friend Kathleen from Lindsay Hill Interiors has done it again! Follow along as she explains how she designed this amazing kitchen.

When designing the home my husband and I recently completed, I had a few goals in mind: lots of natural light, plenty of texture in the finishes, and warm wood touches with black accents.

When it came to the kitchen, that meant that I wanted some white cabinetry, but not all white cabinetry. I decided to work in several pieces of cabinetry in white oak with a beautiful natural finish for added warmth.

I flanked the window wall (the one shown to the left and above with the beautiful Sinkology apron sink) with two tall oak cabinets. The one on the left houses the refrigerator, while the one on the right is a large cabinet for storing all of my dishware, including both everyday and specialty dishes.

I wanted this beautiful apron sink because of the classic, traditional warmth and charm it adds to the space. Its functionality and beauty make it the perfect centerpiece of my kitchen.

Black accents were added to complement the black windows- leathered Absolute Black Granite for the perimeter countertops, and beautiful black lighting – two pendants for over the island, a sconce over the apron sink, and a chandelier over the dining table.

I love how the lighting adds tremendously to the overall clean, crisp feel of the kitchen without overpowering it.

You might notice that I went with a variety of metal finishes for the kitchen – champagne gold in the faucets and the hardware on the white cabinets, and matte black hardware for the oak cabinetry. I love how mixing metals adds depth, character, and texture to the room.

One significant detail in this space is the tongue-and-groove ceiling, which is hard to capture in photos. But along with the black windows and white walls, it really helps to bring character and texture to the kitchen.

You can catch a glimpse of the ceiling in the photo above.

I’m adding a beautiful handmade rug under the dining room table. This will add some needed texture and character to the space. Can’t wait to show you that beauty, but since it’s being custom made, it’s going to take a while. That’s okay – beautiful, perfect finishing touches are definitely worth the wait!

The open shelves help to keep things light, bright, and open as does the white backsplash and the pretty white walls.

Kitchens really are the heart of the home. It’s important to have an end goal in mind as you plan and design them. Pay special attention to the details. When you do, your kitchen will reflect your style, be beautiful to look at, and fun to use!
