On Trend: Farmhouse Kitchens

Farmhouse style is back in a big way. In fact, it’s been one of the hottest trends in home décor for the last few years and it shows no signs of slowing down. And for good reason! Farmhouse style is warm, welcoming, low-maintenance and you can easily put your own spin on it to make it your own. When people ask me what my home décor style is, I always answer with “modern farmhouse.” I love to mix vintage and modern and play around with different textures and color palettes. And as much as I like the farmhouse style in general, I love, love farmhouse kitchens! In that spirit, I thought it might be fun to share a few of my favorite farmhouse kitchen elements.

All About the Sink

The kitchen sink is an obvious first stop to channeling the farmhouse kitchen vibe (I mean, they don’t call it a farmhouse sink for nothing, right?). Sinkology just launched a brand-new line of fireclay farmhouse sinks that are affordable and high on style and quality. They have two fireclay farmhouse sinks, the Josephine and the Bradstreet II. Instant farmhouse appeal that is also functional…win win!

Vintage-Inspired Textiles

Kitchen textiles are another great way to capture the farmhouse style. Think grain sack-inspired patterns and vintage linen appeal. I love the Thompson Hand Towel and the Hatch Hand Towel from Studio McGee. I think they’re the perfect mix of vintage farmhouse and modern minimalist. An updated take on old-fashioned charm. Who says dish towels can’t be stylish?

Storage for the Win

Even if you don’t have open shelving or a big ol’ pantry, it doesn’t mean you can’t stock up on cute storage solutions that often come with these farmhouse kitchen staples. Think apothecary jars, wire egg baskets and whimsical canisters. I’m a huge fan of adding a pop of metallic to every room. I found this set of vintage copper canisters on eBay and they give my countertop a little extra oomph! I’m also a huge fan of these Brushed Wire Fruit Baskets from Anthropologie. They combine copper or gold wire with wood accents, and they come in multiple sizes. Perfect for storing everything from fruit to coffee pods or tea bags to amp up a coffee bar.

Vintage Accents as the Finishing Touch

At the risk of sounding obvious, vintage accents in general are great additions to a farmhouse kitchen. There are so many different ways you can incorporate vintage items or just a vintage feel. Old signs offer a fun opportunity to personalize a space. These Kitchen and Bakery signs from Magnolia capture a nostalgic feel with their time-worn, rustic design. Apothecary-style soaps like these ones from Murchison-Hume take hand washing to a whole new level. This set sits on my counter in a white ceramic tray, and I always get compliments on how pretty it looks. Also, distressed anything complements the farmhouse style to a T! I went big with distressed black cabinets in my kitchen, but you could easily add smaller distressed touches…for example, an antique wooden dough bowl, an old frame or vintage wood scoops.
