Home Décor DIY: Happy Fall Sign to Welcome Guests
October 11, 2017Sinkology is proud to present Kristan Allen, our design expert and guest blogger who runs the @FarmhouseRedefined Instagram. Kristan is here to share some design ideas and inspiration around designing your home around your copper sink.
I’m a crafter by nature. My project ideas don’t always work out, but I love coming up with easy DIY home decor. Fall is one of my favorite times to plan projects because of the warmth and coziness the cooler weather brings. Plus, you have Halloween, Harvest and Thanksgiving to celebrate!
I have a small bar situated on the far side of our kitchen and any time we entertain, I set up drinks and snacks here for guests to serve themselves. So I try to add a touch of seasonal décor to this space to make it more fun. I’ve been on the hunt for a fall sign to display and wasn’t having any luck finding something that fit the space or my style. DIY time! I hit up my local dollar and craft stores and came up with an easy way to make my own sign. Considering you can customize it for any season or occasion, or even use it to hold photos or greeting cards, I thought it would be great to share with you all!
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
I try to keep things budget-friendly when I DIY, so my first stop was the dollar store. There, I picked up a square frame that was originally matted for three different photos. I removed the glass and mat, then spray-painted the frame with white chalk paint. After perusing the aisles at my local craft store, I picked up pre-cut kraft paper banner triangles, letter stickers, mini clothespins and tiny wooden leaves (too cute!). The only other things you’ll need for this project are a hot glue gun and a few lengths of copper electrical wire. You can choose any gauge you’d like…I went with something a little thicker so you could see it really pop against the white frame.
Step 2: Set and Secure Your Wires
Lay your frame face down and decide how you’d like to criss-cross your wire. The words/phrase you’d like to spell out will determine the number of wires you’ll need. In my case, I went with three wires crossed randomly in the frame. Get a general idea of how you’ll arrange your wires and then cut just the first wire to desired length. Use your hot glue gun to affix the wire into the indent in the back of the frame (where the glass usually rests).
Step 3: Place Your Letters
While the glue setting your wire dries, get your letters ready. You can use any type of paper you’d like, and you can choose to hand-letter the words or use stickers like I did. Super easy! From there, arrange the first word face down on the set wire. Add a line of hot glue to affix the letters to the wire. Next, take your second length of wire and adhere it to the frame following the process in step 2. Then arrange and glue those letters. Repeat with any remaining wires. I opted to do one wire and its corresponding letters at a time to ensure my spacing was good and that I’d have room across the frame to add everything I wanted.
Step 4: Add Your Embellishments
Place another wire for any embellishments you’d like to add. In this case, I used these cute, laser-cut wooden leaves. But there are millions of options at craft stores, so get creative! I also added mini clothespins to make it look like they were holding the letters on the copper wire. Note: you can try using just the clothespins to hold the letters on the wire instead of gluing the letters first. This would make it easy to swap out phrases as seasons and occasions change. I glued mine because the kraft paper I used was really thick and those tiny clothespins weren’t gripping it tight enough to hold securely. If you’re going big with this sign and you have a large frame, you could get bigger clothespins, which would definitely do a better job of gripping the paper on their own.
Step 5: Display Your Sign and Enjoy Its Cuteness All Season Long
Once everything is set and dry, choose a spot to display it and enjoy! I propped mine up against my bar backsplash. I love the subtle touch of fall it brings to this little space…and I can keep it up through November. Seasonal decor that has staying power is always a win in my book!
