Effortless Installation with BILT®
Fireclay farmhouse undermount sink installation instructions are available on the BILT® App. Download the BILT App and search “Sinkology” to find interactive instructions specifically for your product and installation type. It’s so simple, it feels like cheating!
Getting Started
This procedure will assist you with installing the Sinkology Farmhouse Undermount Fireclay Sink.
- Pro Installation, Farmhouse
- Flush or Reveal
- Due to the manufacturing process, each fireclay sink will vary slightly dimensionally. We recommend using the actual sink to be installed, not templates, to ensure an exact fit.
Since our Undermount Farmhouse Sinks require additional support, we recommend using professional tools and professional experience when installing them. The Sinkology Farmhouse Sink should not be installed under an existing counter-top or under wood-based counter-top materials. A new solid-material counter-top should be cut and placed after the Sink is installed.
What You’ll Need
Carpenters Square, a Level, a Tape Measure, Painters Tape, a Hammer, a Jigsaw fitted with a Carbide or Diamond Blade, a Power Drill, a 1 1/2″ Hole Saw, a Phillips Screwdriver, 100% Neutral-Cure Silicone Sealant, Plumbers Putty, a Utility Knife, a Carpenters Pencil, a Water-Soluble Marker, and Safety Glasses and Gloves.
To build the Sink Support you will need some 2″ x 4″ lumber, some shims, and a box of nails (or wood screws) at least 4 1/2″ long. Depending on your type of counter-top, you may also need either a Pull-Saw, a Router with a 45-degree Bevel Bit, a Rotary Tool with a Grinding Bit, or an Oscillating Tool.
Instructions
- Turn off the water supply and disconnect the plumbing.
- Remove any existing fixtures and counter-top. If the cabinet has a false front, remove it.
- Compare the height of the Sink to the height from the cabinet doors to the counter-top. If your cabinet doors are close to or overlapping that height, you will need to modify the doors.
- Temporarily place the new counter-top in its exact position on the cabinet.
- Find the centerline of where the Sink will be installed, and mark it on the top of the cabinet and the front of the counter-top. Note: The center will often be where the cabinet doors meet, but your cabinet may vary.
- Remove the counter-top.
- Measure the outer width of the Sinks basin. On the front of the cabinet, measure and mark exactly half that distance on both sides from the center.
- Measure the outer height of the Sinks basin, and add one-eighth inch. Draw a line that distance straight down from each side mark, then draw a straight horizontal line connecting the bottom of those lines.
- Carefully cut out the front of the cabinet along the three lines. Note: Make sure to remove less material at first, then make adjustments to the trim to its finished shape.
- Temporarily place the Sink into the cut cabinet. Make sure its top sits one-eighth inch below the cabinet top, and adjust if needed. Note: The following instructions are for supporting a standard 30-inch-wide sink in a standard 36-inch-wide cabinet unit. If your sink and/or cabinet are different sizes, you will need to modify your supports to fit. The Sink is fully supported when three-quarters inch of the basin is supported on three sides.
- Draw a level horizontal line inside both cabinet sides 1 and one-half inches below the cabinets front cut.
- Make (4) support legs by measuring the distance from the line to the cabinet floor, and cutting 2 by 4 lumber to that length.
- Make (1) back support by measuring the distance between the side walls of the cabinet and cutting a 2 by 4 to that length.
- Make (2) side supports by cutting two 2 by 4s to 12 inches in length.
- Create a support frame by fastening both side supports to the back support as shown using nails or wood screws.
- Attach the (4) legs underneath each corner of the support using nails or wood screws.
- Place the support frame in the cabinet, then level it against the front.
- Attach the support frame to the cabinet sides using several nails or wood screws.
- Place the Sink onto the support frame, with its front edge protruding in front of the cabinet as far as the counter-top will overhang.
- Make sure the Sink is level and secure in both directions.
- Your new Sink was built by hand, so its shape may have minor variations. To ensure the best fit and finish, the opening in the counter-top must be cut to match with great accuracy. Please read and follow these directions before cutting the counter-top.
- Measure the inner width of the Sinks basin. On the counter-top, measure and mark exactly half that distance on both sides from the centerline.
- Apply Painter’s Tape to the top of the counter-top straight back from those marks.
- Using a Square, draw lines on the Tape straight back from those marks.
- Measure the distance from the back of the cabinet to the back of the Sinks basin. Apply Painter’s Tape between the other two lines, then draw a line on the Tape that exact distance from the back of the counter-top.
- Drill starter holes in the back two corners using a 1 and one-half inch Hole Saw.
- Cut the counter-top along the three lines.
- Remove the Tape and smooth the cut edges if needed.
- Temporarily position the counter-top to double-check that it fits properly, then remove it. If necessary, make adjustments to the hole.
- Apply 100% Silicone Sealant where the Sink and the counter-top meet.
- Install the counter-top.
- Create a smooth seal around the Sinks upper rim using 100% Silicone Sealant.
- Install the faucet.
- Reconnect the plumbing, turn on the water, check for leaks, and repair if needed.
Congratulations, this completes the installation of the Sinkology Fireclay Farmhouse Sink.
